Extensive English Essay and Precis Course for CSS & PMS Aspirants

Peace and harmoniousness are the tenets of global progress. However, their existence depends on the coordinated efforts of individuals, societies, and nations, for only when men work together do they achieve great goals. On the other hand, if there prevails perpetual conflict in society, not only new is new progress hampered, but also serious damage is inflicted upon infrastructure, human capital, and the economy. Thus, the fable, “United, we stand; divided, we fall”, holds true even today. To illustrate, the archives of history also point towards this fact: Pakistan’s independence has resulted from the collaborative efforts of children, men, and women from all races. Likewise, households, where all the family members work together, help boost a country’s economy, as is evident in China’s thriving economy. Contrarily, competition and conflicts wreak havoc on growth and prosperity. For example, history bears witness to how the disagreements between Pakistan and India have resulted in constant border skirmishes since independence, leading to the loss of hundreds of lives and causing mammoth amounts to be spent for defence against each other. It has also decreased focus on education, health, and other areas vital for human development. This essay delineates arguments for cooperation and against competition as the prerequisite of peace and prosperity, along with specific practicable measures to attain the desired ends.

“Cooperation and respect for each other will advance the cause of human rights worldwide. Confrontation, vilification, and double standards will not.”

Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwean Revolutionist

The dependence of harmony and progress on cooperation and they’re hampering due to competition could be understood from a famous fable, “United, we stand; divided, we fall”. In the fable, a farmer teaches his sons a lesson that sticks tied together become unbreakable; the same sticks, when tested individually, do not stand a chance. Thus, according to the farmer, if his sons live together with love and harmony, no power will be able to break them; however, if they fight with each other, anyone could break them apart.

To illustrate, history contains examples showing how collaboration and cooperation have brought about revolutions. It shows that men, when working together, become an imperishable force bound to get what it strives for. The Pakistan Movement is a vivid example of this fact. Men, women, children, students, and even scholars participated without discrimination in the fight for freedom. The role of the Aligarh Muslim University and Darul Uloom Deoband is particularly noteworthy. Scholars and ulema of these institutes played a significant role in uniting the Muslims of different sects and fields of life to play a productive role in the struggle, resulting in Pakistan’s independence. Hence, history proves that cooperation is the key to success.

A common manifestation of this fact can also be observed in everyday life. When all household members work together, prosperity finds its way there. Eventually, such a society contributes significantly to a country’s economy. For instance, gender parity is observed in China’s work environment; there, men and women participate equally in all fields of labour. As a result, both genders generate enough capital, resulting in China’s ever-flourishing economy and giving it the power to stand against America, the global giant. Thus, when there is cooperation at a domestic level, peace and prosperity follow.

Likewise, sports teach a lesson of teamwork as well; no person working on his own can win a sports competition. Even if it is a solo race, a whole group is involved in training, counselling, and testing him before his big day. It has been aptly said by Micheal Jordon, a former basketball player, “It takes a team to win a championship”. It means big competitions and games cannot be won without combined effort. Simply put, a relay race involves a team of 3 or more people to finish tasks in the shortest time; only the team that manages to do it collectively takes the title. Hence, sports titles prove that working together brings the trophy home.

Next to it, working synergistically also brings progress in the economic realm. When individuals or nations come together for economic projects, they can consider several dynamics, ideas, and ways of doing business. Similarly, developed nations help developing countries bring ease of business in their society by launching projects there. For example, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), China’s flagship project of the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative, is an excellent example of China’s massive investment in Pakistan. This step of the rising global giant has helped bring food to millions of tables in Pakistan. Moreover, the industries set up under the roof of the CPEC have contributed to a rise in economic activity in the country. Thus, harmony in the world of business brings affluence.

Besides economy and sports, the progress of the crucial health sector also relies on harmony and group work of a country’s institutes. For instance, Pakistan’s health sector has become the provinces’ prerogative after the 18th constitutional amendment. Hence, only if all three state organs – the executive, judiciary, and legislature – work together with the local governments can the health sector progress holistically. Evidence of such collaborative work has been witnessed in the overarching role of the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) in coordinating all wings of the health sector to beat the COVID-19 pandemic. The NCOC has worked alongside local health departments to check incoming and outgoing patients, mortalities, and treatment regimens and has received global praise for its timely actions against the pandemic. Thus, coordination in the health department brings success, even if the fight is against deadly global diseases.

Societal progress and prosperity are also the fruit of combined efforts. Whether fighting to erase social evils or working to achieve a common goal, nothing will be accomplished if every person does not put in his effort. For example, after the prevalence of Hepatitis and Breast cancer worldwide, Pakistan has decided to launch awareness campaigns nationwide. Education institutes arrange walks on their campuses and on specific days of the year to educate the masses about these diseases and their screening to catch them in early phases and make treatment easy. However, if these campaigns are not carried out simultaneously nationwide, they would bring little advantage. Hence, societal affairs only improve when everyone puts in a combined effort.

On a slightly larger scale, cooperation, rather than competition, also promotes regional peace and prosperity. When countries collaborate on developmental projects, the whole region progresses; differences are sorted out diplomatically, and an example is set for the world to follow. Several organizations are operating for this cause, namely the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). These organizations work in their respective regions to promote solidarity among the member countries and improve their relations via collaborative projects. Hence, there is little chance of wars and conflicts when countries depend on each other. So, it may be claimed that regional cooperation organizations bring peace and stability.

Extrapolating the idea of regional cooperation to the global scale, organizations that help countries come together also promote harmony. When nations agree to resolve conflicts through diplomacy, there remains a slight chance of the world falling into a World War. For this purpose, the United Nations Organization (UNO) was established after World War Two and has since launched several peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions across the globe. For instance, the UNO has intervened in Kashmir several times for a ceasefire at the Pakistan-India Line of Control. Although the two countries are still at daggers drawn, the UNO has been successful in helping them avoid a full-scale war, which would be devastating for the whole world because both countries are nuclear powers. Hence, global cooperation leads to global peace.

“Without resolving the Kashmir dispute, lasting peace cannot be maintained in the region.”

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif

Where cooperation brings about continuous progress, conflict breeds crisis, be it humanitarian, social, political, environmental, or economic. In the field of politics, although disagreement is the beauty of democracy, problems begin when people fail to agree on matters respectfully. Such is the case in Pakistan’s politics; unhealthy competition between the ruling and opposition parties leads to a prevailing chaotic state of affairs in the country. The two parties are always looking to humiliate and criticize each other, often for no reason. For instance, even if a government’s policy proves beneficial for the people, the opposition parties consider it their duty to find fault with it. The same goes for when the other party comes into power; hence, no policy gets to be efficiently implemented, leading the country to stay in constant chaos. So, conflict is the reason behind a lack of developmental projects.

In regional matters, conflict and fights hamper progress and prosperity. When countries in a region do not see eye to eye, all their efforts are directed towards pushing each other down. Hence, the military budget takes the lion’s share of the country’s earnings, leaving little for infrastructural or industrial growth. It also makes them spend massive amounts on weapons of mass destruction, putting regional peace at stake. The most apparent evidence is Pakistan and India’s constant strife since independence, which has led them to spend a massive budgetary share on defence. The two countries, hence, have made very little progress socially, politically, and economically compared to other countries.

Disputes on an international scale also paint a similarly gloomy picture of disturbing world peace. Global powers having fights have a trickledown effect on their regions and the neighbouring areas; international trade is disturbed, and the whole world experiences economic repercussions. For instance, the Sino-American trade war and the Russia-Ukraine war have disturbed world peace and prosperity. All the countries involved have global influence and, thus, have pushed the world to the brink of nuclear combat. Hence, international conflicts and competition disturb global peace and prosperity.

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”,

Albert Einstein

Similarly, since the beginning of the industrial revolution in the late 19th century, the world has seen ever-increasing competition between countries, which has caused severe climate repercussions. Each country is in a race to expand its industrial production and trade and, in this very race, ignores the pollution that comes with setting up industries. Putting together the impact of all nations, the industrial rivalry has unleashed the menace of global warming, evident in the 0.07 degrees Celsius rise per decade in the earth’s average temperature since the 1880s. Moreover, several natural disasters like floods and tsunamis have come with global warming, levelling infrastructure and taking millions of lives. Thus, industrial competition has also brought devastation to the world.

Despite the havoc wreaked by global rows, all is not lost. A lot could still be done to mitigate the damage already done and prevent such future events by focusing on practicable and holistic measures. First, there is a need to focus on national interests rather than personal ones. When people are no longer greedy, there will be fewer disputes on domestic and societal levels; the country’s benefit will be prioritized, and the nation will witness progress as a whole.

Second, the role of international and regional organizations must be boosted to be more influential and effective in their peacebuilding, peacekeeping, and peacemaking activities. Often, global powers do not pay heed to the initiatives taken by the UN, for instance. This sets an example for other countries, resulting in unresolved global disputes – a great example being the Kashmir issue. However, if the organizations mentioned above are empowered, and their writ established, conflicts would be resolved, and peace, prevalent.

“Peace is not the absence of conflict; it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means.”

Ronald Regan, Former American President

Next to it, the wide gap between the global north and south also needs to be bridged. The countries in the north are relatively more industrially and technologically advanced than those in the south. Furthermore, it has generated a general perception of hostility between the two, resulting in nothing but increased disparity. So, effort should be put in to bring the two parts of the world closer by working on projects of mutual benefit. Moreover, developed countries should also step forward to provide humanitarian assistance to the world’s deprived parts because the world is as developed as its most vulnerable country.

The environmental cons of industrial expansion also need to be addressed urgently, for they have put the planet on the brink of collapse. And similar to how the industries of all the nations have wreaked havoc as their combined effect, all the countries can work together to carry out plantation drives to counter these effects. This is the only way the blue planet can be returned to safety.

Lastly, educating and bringing awareness to the masses is equally essential for cooperation. People must be taught about the merits of working together and collaborating on projects and the harms of unwanted and damaging competition through campaigns on television, radio, and on the campuses of education institutes. Once individuals understand the importance of cooperation for peace and prosperity, countries will automatically follow, and the world will become a peaceful place to live in.

In a strong analysis of the given arguments, there remains no doubt that cooperation brings about progress; still, reaching a point of global consensus is not easy. Every nation’s interests are counter to each other, so organizations like ASEAN and the UN have failed to achieve all their objectives efficiently. Moreover, as much as the developing countries want to progress industrially, the developed nations do not want to downgrade their advancements. So, the perpetual peace and progress environment seems a distant dream, especially in these times of discoveries and innovation.

“The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation.”

Bertrand Russel, Writer

In other words, teamwork breeds success; individuals working together bring nations to prosperity; organizations cooperating make tackling challenges possible; nations collaborating bring regional progress; and global solidarity blooms worldwide harmony and advancement. On the other hand, unhealthy competition in politics, fights among countries, and conflicts for hegemony and industrial supremacy are some factors that have pushed the world to the edge of destruction socially, politically, economically, morally, and environmentally. Nevertheless, hope is not lost until chances of collaboration exist. Therefore, all-encompassing growth and development can be achieved by religiously following a few suggestions: focusing on the greater good rather than personal interests; boosting the role of international organizations; closing the technological gap between countries; and raising awareness in the masses about the environmental hazards brought about by the industrial race. In short, it is the need of the hour to work sagaciously on this matter because the survival of humanity depends on peace, and its progress, on collective advancement, whereas competition and rivalry only bring destruction.
