Power of a chip

Power of a chip

Written by Khizra Khalil

A small piece of chip – about one centimetre long- has changed the entire world. The phone in one’s hand, a smartwatch that one wears daily, and many high-tech gadgets that one uses are now feasible just because of the invention of transistors (a transistor is a device which acts as a switch, and it amplifies an input signal). We cannot imagine a contemporary world without high tech gadgets, so one can say that transistors have revolutionized the world.

In December 1947, Brattain, J. Bardeen, and Shockley invented the first transistor, and it was named point-contact transistor (it consists of a germanium wafer, a plastic triangle with gold plated sides, and a spring over the head of the triangle; the spring pushes the apex of germanium; therefore, it is called a point-contact transistor). They hooked a microphone on the left side of the transistor and an oscillator on the other side. When one of the scientists spoke into the microphone, the signal was amplified and boom – it changed the world completely. Moreover, just imagine, a weak signal from the cell phone tower, when it reaches one’s cell phone, a transistor inside it amplifies the signal, and he hears a phone call. In the past, people used vacuum tubes in place of transistors. Vacuum tubes are not reliable, nor can it provide high efficiency. During world war II, when there was no means of communication, transistors’ invention proved an asset for the invention of the radio. Later on, transistors were used in the radar system.

A small piece of chip, consisting of millions of transistors, has converted room-sized computers to small laptops. We live in a world of technology, and we carry a mobile phone or a laptop with us to stay updated and work efficiently. Hence, transistors are the building block of modern technology.

In an age where everything is becoming increasingly computerized, computer circuits have powered practically everything. Modern life depends on semiconductor chips and transistors, which can switch electronic signals on and off. We are pretty sure the future still holds a few surprises. Extensive research is being carried out on graphene, organic electronics, quantum devices, microsystems, and silicon integration with other materials. We hope that the future of semiconductors is pretty exciting.
