Corruption in Pakistan | for CSS and PMS Aspirants

Written by Khansa Yousaf

Corruption is one of the major hitches that overpower the peace, prosperity, and stability of a nation. It not only hampers socio-economic development but also hinders human progress globally. It is a global issue that is not confined to third world countries only. Unfortunately, Pakistan is in the list of countries where corruption is endemic and systemic. It exists in different forms, such as nepotism, bribery, illegal facilitation of payments, fraud, money laundering, gift-receiving etc., both in the state and private sectors. The country needs to curtail the menace of corruption to achieve progress in the world. The government must take some concrete steps to develop strict policies and strengthen the institutions, which are engaged in the eradication of corruption.

A major cause of corruption in the country is illiteracy. An ignorant person cannot differentiate between right and wrong; consequently, he wants to earn money either by hook or by crook to fulfil his desires. Feudal lords are also responsible for corruption in the country. They not only obstruct the way of education and development in their areas but also offer bribes to government officers to achieve their objectives. Feudalism must be ended to make Pakistan corruption-free.

Lack of transparency is another major cause of corruption in the country. Corrupt officials misuse their powers and do not use any transparent way to execute their work. They embezzle public funds to achieve their whims and wishes instead of spending them for the betterment of common man. Such officers are not dealt with strict laws; rather, they are supported by politicians who use them for their vested interest.

Similarly, lack of accountability is also caused by corruption in the country. Anti-corruption departments have failed to root out corruption in the country. They set corrupt people free after receiving bribes. Ironically, a person is respected because of his wealth, not character in Pakistani society. The phenomenon leads corrupt people to become proud of their wealth instead of being ashamed of their actions. Judiciary can play a pivotal role in this regard by checking corrupt people’s activities and implementing exemplary punishments to them.

To conclude, the government needs to introduce some effective policies to eradicate corruption at all departments, either government or private. Media can also play a positive role by putting a check on government policies and private organizations. Besides, it can expose their weaknesses to bring improvement in their policies. Writers can also urge people through their writings to fight against corruption.
