6- Critical Analysis
7- Conclusion
Intercultural communication -the interpenetration of norms, values, and ideas among nations- has transformed the state-centric view of society into a vision of a global village. It has paved the way for cordial integration among people and underpinned social cohesion, peace, and security. Having witnessed two lethal world wars in history due to the lack of intercultural communication and ethnocentrism, humans are now on the verge of World War III with the rising territorial and civilizations clashes. However, international travelling and immigration-along with the establishment of the internet- have changed the dynamics of the states’ social, economic, and political landscape beyond geographical boundaries. Additionally, the intercultural exchange of music, art, food, and intellect through the celebrations of multi ethno-religious events and education exchange programs is also a global norm, which not only creates a sense of understanding and tolerance but also helps clear misconceptions among people around the globe. Further, intercultural globalization has helped countries settle their disputes through diplomacy that were otherwise to be only solved by nuclear weapons. Likewise, the peace campaigns on social media by the global community and freedom of the press and digital journalism have raised awareness for the disadvantaged speaking out against brutality. International organizations- like the United Nations, despite its significant inclination towards the west, have also played their part in tackling discourses at peaceful grounds. Thus, considering the importance it holds, intercultural communication needs to be enhanced by altering the views of parochial ethnic, religious, and political groups for each other, investing in technological advancement solely for the betterment of mankind, and regularising the impartial responsibilities of international organizations. The essay deals with the potential of intercultural communication in overcoming the eminence of World War III, along with the ways to strengthen it for good.
In a literature view, intercultural communication essentially deals with communication across different cultures and social groups and describes the processes and issues among groups of individuals from varied cultural backgrounds. The term is often interchangeably used with cross-cultural or multicultural communication. However, both are different, with the former referring to how a group or team of people of different nationalities is composed and the latter dealing with comparing two or more different cultures. On the other hand, intercultural communication takes into account exchanges taking place between different cultures. Thus, it is a kind of globalization that not only focuses on observing the way with which a person from a particular culture interacts with others but also accumulating knowledge about a culture through interaction or communication in the form of shared stories based on subjective, individual experiences also comes under the ambit of intercultural communication. Putting it briefly, in intercultural communications, nations adopt principles, beliefs and costumes of other nations globally.

Since the advent of mankind, there have been continuous conflicts among the flag bearers of contrasting cultures, ideologies, and religions. The disputes have even manifested themselves in the form of two great wars: World War I and World War II, encapsulating the whole of mankind in their wrath. Since then, every meagre tussle has been bringing with it the fear of World War III. Nonetheless, there are a few factors that, according to thinkers and philosophers, have aggravated the threat, the first among which is the clash of civilizations. According to Huntington, the differences among various civilizations, and the sense of conflict between them, have been steadily increasing over the last few decades. In his own world, “Wars of the future will be fought along civilizational fault lines.” It is evident in the form of rising islamophobia in the West since the world’s notorious 9/11 terrorist attacks, the tussle between communism and capitalism in the form of the cold war, and multiple conflict hotspots around the world that pit one civilization against another like Palestine, Kashmir, Palestine, and Nagorno-Karabakh etc. Likewise, the other territorial disputes for economic paramountcy, such as the South China Sea dispute, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the trade policies of China and the USA, have also added fuel to the fire. Thus, the shadow of another nuclear world war is always looming over the head of today’s interdependent world.
Nonetheless, despite the various civilizations’ cultural and ideological differences that might break out a war, intercultural communication- interknowing and interchanging multiple cultures- is the only way forward. It can help resolve misconceptions among states. For this purpose, track II diplomacy- also known as backchannel diplomacy is the most desired approach in which even lethal disputes can be settled with the non-governmental, informal and unofficial contacts and activities between private citizens or groups of individuals. For instance, several forums, such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies Pacific Forum (CSISPF), the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), and others, have brought the US and Chinese defense officials to the table unofficially after tensions rose over the 1999 US bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade and the 2001 spy-plane incident on Hainan Island. As a result, both countries agreed to negotiate judiciously without any bloodshed.
Moreover, real-time interaction among people from all over the world through the internet, particularly social media, can do miracles in attaining peace. There is now a widespread trend of screen-based peace campaigns where the global community speaks out for the violence and injustice going on under the sun. One out of thousands of such examples is the digital protests on the Palestine issue. Although the Palestinians have always been oppressed by Israel in their former own homeland, netizens have started showing solidarity with them in the last few years. They heaved the issue through hashtags like #freepalestine on Twitter and the customized display pictures on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter until the international community took it on a serious note. Consequently, the Israeli militants give their intentions of hurting Palestinian natives a second thought due to international pressure. So, cultural globalization via the Internet can even prevent despotism and war.
Adding more to the roles intercultural communication can play, and still playing, in the prevention of a third World War, it may bind countries with peace agreements to limit violence through international peacemaking organizations. India and Pakistan, for instance, have always been eye to eye with each other since their inception, with Kashmir being the buffer zone for both in particular and various other issues like the Indus Water tussles in general. Nonetheless, different international organisations that believe in cultural inclusiveness, particularly the United Nations and the World Bank, have made them sign a total of 44 treaties between 1947 and 2017. The achievement has been no less than putting the two swords in a single scabbard, but it has always prevented the rivalry of both countries from devolving into war.
Today, not even a single country exists in this world that does not have any foreign citizens working or living there. All thanks are due to globalization. However, appreciating the culture of the coming pool brings social coherence, development, and harmony to the world without damaging global diversity. To illustrate, Australia is a state that is identified with more than 270 ancestries; its people speak over 260 languages, and a wide range of religions are practiced on its land. Notwithstanding, the country celebrates harmony day on March 21 every year to develop a sense of inclusiveness among its people. Consequently, Australia stands among a few of the most peaceful, diverse, and developed countries in the world. Thus, intercultural communication through such a comprehensive approach globally can save the world from all kinds of threats or wars.
Another way through which intercultural communication can bring peace and prosperity to the world is the role of the press and digital media. Free and responsible journalism can change the fate of the physically and socially deprived class by raising awareness for them. Aljazeera is one such international media network that broadcasts not only global news but also airs awareness documentaries, podcasts, and long reads to have influence. It is an unspoken fact that people with disabilities, despite the multiple initiatives, are not even kept the last priority when it comes to crafting emergency plans. The same has been noticed by Aljazeera in the recent unprecedented floods in Pakistan. So, they made global policymakers for taking into account the people with disabilities in the emergency plans. In this way, intercultural respect would be enhanced even in the hearts of the differently abled populace, ultimately bringing the world to peace, holding behind the thoughts of violence and wars.
Moreover, the celebration of multi-ethnic-religious events also promoted the mantra of co-existence and harmony. Non-Muslim states like the US, New York, and India celebrate the public holiday on Muslim religious events like Eid-ul-Fitr. Likewise, Muslim states like Malaysia and Syria celebrate public holidays on Diwali and Easter, respectively. These are the perfect examples of intercultural communication. When people belonging to different cultures and worshipping different religions respect each other’s festivals and norms, tolerance and acceptance are fostered among them. As a result, the notions of cultural hatred are refuted, and the fear of one civilization for the other is diminished, which could prevent them from breaking into any war.
Last but not least, Education Exchange programs are one of the most significant intercultural communication tools that can prevent the globe from the threats of World War 3. Education is a key to self-realization, and man, by nature, is peace-loving. Further, when ways are paved for education beyond the border, it expands the parochial mentality of people and makes the students communicate interculturally. Communication, in return, can restore peace in the ongoing threats of wars. As it is aptly said by J William Fulbright- the initiator of the Fulbright Scholarship program for international students in the US, “International educational exchange is one of the significant projects designed to continue the process of humanizing mankind…we must try to expand the boundaries of human wisdom, empathy and perception, and there is no way of doing that except through education.”
Considering the importance it holds, intercultural communication needs to be strengthened in a way that could maximize global peace. For this to happen, all the international territorial and maritime disputes need to be settled through diplomacy. There are multiple options that can be chosen. For instance, at first, the states must try to resolve the issue through bilateral talks- either officially or unofficially. Nonetheless, the main purpose behind it must be to actually resolve the conflict than power politics. Moreover, since much of intercultural interaction happens unconsciously, special efforts must be made in the culture-focus programs and policies to alter the views of parochial ethnic, religious, and political groups for each other. In this way, multiple birds could be killed with one stone for the cause of promoting peace and preventing wars.
Next to it, all the states, particularly the superpowers, must be bound to invest in technological advancement solely for the betterment of mankind. Man is living in the age of a technological race that is apparently done for human ease; nevertheless, it is a fact that a maximum of technological inventions have been performed only in competitions with the opponent bloc to defeat it in advancement. As a result, the world has witnessed a nocuous cold war, and the second is also around the corner that needs to be stopped in time utilizing an idealist approach. Furthermore, international global as well as regional organizations, like the United Nations, need to be impartial so that they might not lean towards their major donors. Likewise, global media and press need to ensure a positive and uninfluenced working environment. The Internet is one of the significant tools that promote intercultural communication. Hence, its constructive use can do marvels in the prevention of the 3rd World War.
Although intercultural communication is no less than a wand when it comes to its role in promoting peace and diminishing the threat of war, is cultural intercommunication enough to save the world from devastation like the previous two world wars is a topic that always remains in rhetoric. Keeping aside the feeling of emotions, assuming that cultural intercommunication only is potentiated to divert another great conflict would be naive. European rivals from both world wars were, culturally speaking, not on opposing poles. Likewise, present-day Russia and Ukraine are in the battlefield despite having a lot in common in their culture, lifestyles, and thinking. Thus, just as there can be multiple economic and political reasons behind the outbreak of war, intercultural communication is just one piece of the puzzle of world peace. Therefore, economic and political integration, tolerance, and inclusivity are also as important, if not more, as cultural intercommunication to keep the world from the threat of war and conflicts.
In a nutshell, the world is living in the age of globalization, where intercultural communication is a spontaneous process that has inclined with everyone’s routine. However, there is an equal incidence of ongoing conflicts on the territorial, ideological, economic, and political basis all over the world, setting the world on fire of war threats. Nonetheless, intercultural interaction and cooperation is key to diffusing the conflicts of the future through the promotion of beyond-borders education, screen-based peace campaigns, and multicultural social coherence while maintaining global diversity. Nevertheless, culture alone cannot save the world from another world war. More complex steps considering politics and economics, are the need of the hour to diffuse the bomb of another world war that could potentially exterminate humanity.
