Human nature is the amalgamation of man’s traits developed due to his life experiences. Thus, a person’s roller-coaster journey, a long and tiresome ride, is the cornerstone upon which his fate depends. Indeed, the person is tested via multiple obstacles and trials at every turn while passing through various tumultuous paths. Sadly, these tribulations always leave myriad un-noticed marks, which can only be felt, not seen, on his personality, and, slowly, pierce his soul in every manner. As far as his emotional journey is concerned, his experiences have undoubtedly enveloped him at every level of the world’s organization by unfolding the extremities of vulnerabilities, making his survival a question from a broader perspective. Through his visionary foreplay, the poet Thomas Shelley thus makes people realize the bitter reality that no one is free from the never-ending adversity cycle of life. Talking generally about the pains given by the thorns of life to an individual, they indeed make him mentally distressed, along with diminishing his personal growth. Further, the power centralized and class-based thorns breed an unequal society, leaving its peace and order in the lurch. Moving forward, people have to bear the economic burden and political repression from their leaders due to their lacklustre attitude while living in a state, making their lives full of suffering. Last but not least, the human life’s story, interwoven with sufferings, clearly portrays the picture of self-centred approaches on the fainted shoulders of the shared humanity concept at the global level, which can be mended via adopting multiple collaborative approaches at all levels. This essay highlights the maxim of how a person bleeds when he falls upon the thorns of life.

Before moving ahead towards the explanation of aphorism ‘How a person bleeds when he falls upon the thorns of life’, it is important to decode the poem’s verse, ‘I fall upon the thorns of life, I bleed!’ and understand its meaning in depth. Speaking directly about the contextual interpretation of the verse, the romantic poet actually describes human sufferings and pains, especially his own, owing to the oppression by the European rulers in England. During his political struggle yearning for dissemination of his ideas across the globe and revolution, also reflected by his poem’s metaphor ‘Wind’ in his poem, ‘Ode to the West’, the poet, indeed, has given the message that life is not a bed of roses; instead, it is the bed of thorns. The analogy ‘Thorns of life’ clearly explains the unbridled, unavoidable, and unexpected adversities a person faces in his life, which develops a sense of helplessness that exacerbates his physical and emotional wounds that always bleed in the form of continuous suffering and strive throughout his life. Thus, the poet throws light on the universal theme of human misery and endurance as a result of the lemons thrown into their lives.

Taking a glance at the maxim of how a person bleeds when he falls upon the thorns of life at the individual level, a person’s emotional distress level rises whenever he encounters overburdening pressures, be it external or internal, in his life. Indeed, these haphazard triggers retard his performance capacity and make him a dull and depressed person, which later on compelled him towards suicide after long-lasting bearing. According to the National College Health Assessment, “In the United States (US) alone, over 1 in 5 students have been diagnosed with depression, along with mood disturbances, negatively affected their academic performance by a healthcare professional.” The facts portray a clear picture of man’s emotional disturbance, hence highlighting his sorrowful condition.

Moreover, after encountering the heart-wrenching troubles of life, an individual’s personal growth and self-confidence diminish. Indeed, the person becomes insecure, as the sufferings and stigmas leave him with nothing but an inferiority complex and insecurities, which ruin his life in every manner. According to the latest issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, “Adults, especially women, have the lowest self-esteem throughout their adulthood, which affects their education, income, health, and employment status.” As a result, he loses hope in his life and sinks into the swamp of regret with every passing day. Therefore, a person owing to the psycho-social issues surrounding him all of his life limits his entire personal development throughout his life.

Moving forward towards society’s level where the maxim still holds its significance, socio-economic declivities breed inequality among the masses in societies, which later become the cornerstone of anarchic situations in them. As Nelson Mandela also said, “As long as poverty, injustice, and gross inequality persist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” Besides giving birth to haves and haves not a condition in society, its ripple effect always shakes the very foundation of the civilizations and makes barbarity the order of the day there. Whereas some people are of the view that these declivities are not responsible for the social disharmony in society, they are unaware of the fact that the oldest civilization, like the European civilization, had also broken due to these deprivations.

Likewise, when they arise in a society, multiple socio-economic and hegemony problems always distort the cultural harmony among the people. To illustrate, the case study of Pakistan’s society is the glaring manifestation where cultural differences have grown so much due to unequal dissemination of fundamental rights and distribution of wealth that they have divided them on the basis of sect and ethnicity. Due to this, they are polarized and bear the anathemas of identity crisis, for instance, missing persons, separatist movements, and new provinces debates. Sadly, society’s peace has been jeopardized, and the concept of unity in society has become a far-fetched dream. Thus, various structural issues have left society in the lurch with many agonies and pains.

Jumping to analyze the maxim’s validity at the state’s level, a country’s strength is mainly gauged by its economic strength, which, when shattered, always increases the economic burden straight on the shoulders of its people. According to the survey report published by Manpower, “Forty-one countries have faced an inflation of 77 per cent skill shortage problem in 2023, compared to 35 per cent in 2013.” As a result, their people suffer unemployment, frustration, extremism, and, in the end, a multiplication of various crimes. So, the people of countries have to pay a heavy price for the economic declivity caused by the officials’ negligence.

Speaking in a similar vein, the state’s people bear the thorns of life, such as heightened political repression, due to which barbarism becomes their fate. To visualize a glimpse of the claim, India’s lockdown in occupied Kashmir is a glaring example in this regard. Ironically, the people of the piece of that land have been suffering the brutality of the state officials, which has jeopardized their very existence on their land. Sadly, their yearning for their due rights has always remained unheard across the globe, making it their fate and slowly tearing their souls apart.

Adding more at the global level, the thorns of life in the form of socio-economic disparities have jeopardized the peoples’ peace and security living in the global village. Indeed, it is so because the declivities exacerbate frustration among the deprived masses, which further gives rise to terrorist activities worldwide. According to the Global Terrorism Index report (2023), “Terrorist attacks have become more deadly with their lethality rising by 26 per cent.” Sadly, people around the globe are suffering due to it, showing the gloomy picture of people’s suffering.

Last but not least, global citizens also bear life’s thorns in the form of the global leader’s lacklustre behaviour toward each other on specific issues. Instead of collaborating and cooperating, they prefer zero-sum games, supporting their national interests, which only spread hatred in the hearts of people and anarchy in the world as the ultimate faith. To bear the testimony, the global leaders’ lip service to human rights violation cases, such as the Palestine issue, is the clear manifestation of the case. Without any doubt, people without basic facilities have been enduring all the hardships just for their right to land and sacrificing their lives to secure the religious mosque for decades. So, people have to pay a heavy cost for the global leaders’ negligence.

However, a person can overcome his life-long sufferings by developing resilience in every matter of his life by focusing on personal growth traits. Indeed, man can grow stronger by following a strict, disciplined routine. In this way, his confidence level will be boosted, and he will live a life full of hope. For instance, Sadako, a two-year girl who survived the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, lived all her life fighting the aftershocks of radioactive with bravery and also raised the morale of all other people in her surroundings by making paper cranes as a sign of strength, power, and peace. Thus, everyone can make his life easier by developing good characteristics in him.

Further, equality is the key to the betterment of civilizations, so everyone in his society should have to distribute resources among all and also foster moral values in it. To accomplish this, people have to explore their surroundings and help the needy people in the form of charity as an essential exercise of their lives. For instance, all Muslims across the globe practice charity in the form of giving Zakat to the rightful people in their societies. By doing this, they promote brotherhood and also bridge the gaps between haves and have-nots in their communities. So, everyone should follow this system to promote positivity in their societies.

Likewise, at the state level, all genders should be provided equal social, economic, and political opportunities, along with awareness about political education. Indeed, it is the base upon which the country’s growth and development largely depend. For instance, Pakistan’s women, who are 50 per cent of the country’s population according to the Macro Trends, have fewer opportunities than men in social, economic, and political domains. Therefore, the country’s Gross Domestic Production (GDP) growth rate is lower than that of many other developing countries. But, the countries that started implementing the policies formulated on the basis of equity principles, like Sweden and Iceland, will surely boom in all the human development and peace indexes. So, the country’s people’s sufferings can be lessened by adopting such policies at large.

Lastly, the global juggernauts should have to focus on encouraging innovation and boosting collaboration on all fronts globally. After that, peace and prosperity will become equally the fate of every nation, whether it is the first world one or the third world one. To make it happen in its fullest way, the countries must avoid war against each other, focus on their human development, and extend themselves towards various logistics and technology-led agreements, such as ‘Australia-Germany Joint Research Cooperation Scheme’ instead of friend-shoring, making blocs, and nuclear proliferation agreements. In this manner, human rights will be secured in every part of the globe, and the war, like the Russian-Ukraine war, will come to an end, emphasizing love and peace for all.

In a critical manner, the phrase “I fall upon the thorns of life, I bleed!” evokes a sense of people’s suffering and vulnerability. In fact, it portrays the image of a person’s helplessness while facing the pain and hardships of his life. Sometimes, it also envisages the deepness of the thorns by representing peoples’ fatalistic passive acceptance of their life’s problems and trials. As every side has two coins, the phrase, with its deep message, also pushes people to overthrow the mask of hopelessness and heal their pain with perseverance after acknowledging it. By doing this, they can live a prosperous life at a level full of prestige.

To conclude, the phrase provides the message of human suffering owing to the hand of their experiences. Notably, it also provides the reminder message to all that life is a journey full of ups and downs, testifying to people at every point with ease, hardships, sorrows, failures, and many other difficulties. So, a person has to face them all with patience and strength so that he can build strength to endure and, at the same time, overcome them in a reasonable way. In the end, these tribulations will make a person strong, compassionate, and wiser to face the next challenges of his life.
