8- Conclusion

Ever since man’s landing on Earth, the planet has seen nothing but advancements and inventions. Some inventions have led to man’s betterment, while others have proved signals of destruction. Nevertheless, every discovery has always served as the basis of another discovery. And the reason lies in man’s curious nature, constantly evolving science and the ever-expanding sphere of knowledge. To elaborate on the phenomenon, thus, several fields could be studied. For instance, newer and better pedagogical methods have shifted the focus from rote memorization to conceptual learning, improving student prospects. Moreover, cutting-edge technology, like Artificial Intelligence, has also been making lives easier for people around the globe, giving them a time and intelligence boost to ease the way for further developments. Contrarily, a lack of innovation proves a recipe for disaster because a great many civilizations have disappeared in the tide of time as they failed to run at the pace of the developing world. Still, if conscious enough, men can sagaciously get even the most underdeveloped nations to join the race of innovations. This essay, beginning with the causes behind innovations, discusses several ways that innovations serve as foundations for more innovations and how the realm of discoveries could be expanded globally.

“Individual Curiosity, Often Working Without Practical Ends in Mind, has Always Been a Driving Force for Innovation.”

– American Physicist, Fredrick Seitz

The word “innovation” refers to the discovery or invention of ideas or items of use. The statement, thus, means that innovations light up the path to further advancements in fields they occur in. Simply put, when a discovery is made, it serves as the basis of newer developments. People work using those discoveries, do research for their improvement, and bring about changes in them, leading to further inventions, and the cycle continues. In short, bringing about innovation the first time might be a difficult task. However, as it comes into human hands, the world of endless opportunities is opened to it, with new needs and requirements encouraging more innovations.

Now that the basic concept has been cleared, a question is posed; how come innovations are so sustainable that each gives rise to another? The answer lies in three main elements: the unquenchable human thirst for learning, the ever-flourishing scientific advancements, and the interplay of various fields of study. First, as men are curious beings, they never settle for less; always in search of more to make their lives better; human beings keep exploring the world around them, keeping the cycle of innovations going. Second, scientific advancement has not looked back since the industrial revolution, and it has made every new decade see an altogether new picture of the world, becoming one of the reasons for never-ending progress.

Last but not least, as knowledge has grown compared to the time of ancient Greek philosophers, who had mastered almost every area of knowledge existent at the time, various fields of study – known as inter-disciplinary studies – have been introduced. The interaction and interplay of these fields offer the same essence of learning as was available to the Greek philosophers back in the day. And with so much to learn available to all, it is unsurprising that the road to innovation has no end. Thus, human curiosity, improvement in science and technology, and the rise of new knowledge fields have led to innovations upon innovations.

“Every Once in a While, a New Technology, an Old Problem, and a Big Idea Turn into an Innovation.”

– Founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos

Moving towards the arguments, discoveries and innovations from several fields would be discussed, and it would be elaborated on how discoveries in all areas pave the way for more of them. The first in line is education, where newer and better pedagogical methods have been developed to improve student learning outcomes. With better results, hence, come better prospects, both in studies and practical life. For instance, a classroom learning methodology, the flipped classroom learning model, allows students to study the lesson under consideration first by themselves, and then they carry out hands-on experiments regarding the learning. This way, their shift focuses away from rote memorization and towards conceptual understanding, and the students who have strong concepts have better facilities to make future improvements in the education field. Thus, improvements in the realm of education pave the way for further development in it.

Next in line is the field of literature. As the world progresses, new problems give rise to new ideas, affecting the literary people of the time and making them develop further theories on societal issues. And research and development on such issues, like the women’s rights movements, improves the masses’ literary understanding, paving the way for, say, a more gender-inclusive society. Significant evidence of such an instance is Ester Boserup’s book on womenomics, “Women’s Role in Economic Development”, which has managed to start a great debate on the importance of women in the economic upliftment of a country, allowing for more women to rise from all parts of the world and partake in the commercial field. Thus, generating new ideas in the literary domain also establishes new roads to advancement.

“Desperation sometimes Drives Innovation.”

– CEO Uber, Dara Khosrowshahi

Furthermore, technological advancements also act as doorways to more development. Introducing cutting-edge technology has made lives easier for people across different fields. This, in turn, has given them a boost to further improve the technology by saving time and energy. As a piece of evidence, Chat GPT and GPT 4, having revolutionized the fields of programming and writing codes for software, aid engineers in developing error-free codes, and even look for miscalculations and faults in the already present programmes, increasing their efficiency. Thus, a single leap in technology is actually a push for more progress in the field.

Moving on, progress in the field of medicine has also unleashed its true potential. Unlike in the near past, when one could only have healthcare access if he could visit a hospital in person, the latest medical gadgets have allowed doctors to expand their service circle even to the remotest areas. For instance, telemedicine, the latest concept of consulting doctors from home via telephone or video conferencing, has made it easier for people to access healthcare from the comforts of their homes. And with ever-expanding remote health services, there is hope that healthcare would soon be available universally.

Besides medicine and society, innovations also bring a boom in the agriculture sector, with more and more novelties smoothening the way for agricultural progress. The field, as compared to the past, has grown both qualitatively and quantitatively after the introduction and incorporation of technology and computing gadgets. For instance, remote sensing and farm automation have revolutionized crop production by increasing the efficient usage of resources and minimizing the damages done by natural disasters with the help of forecasting and prevention. Hence, modern agriculture techniques encourage safe agricultural practices to bring ease to future farmers so that they could produce a qualitatively and quantitatively higher yield.

“The Glory of Medicine is That It is Constantly Moving Forward and That There is Always More to Learn.”

– US Physician and Surgeon, William James Mayo

Likewise, innovations in the domain of politics also promise new dimensions of progress. As the field has seen several advancements in recent years, governance has become much easier and more efficient. The political environment is also being cleaned of illegal and immoral acts that politicians use to come into power. To elaborate, faster, safer, and more transparent elections are conducted by using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which, in turn, decrease the chances of rigging in elections. The EVMs, thus, make room for a legitimate government enshrining the true spirit of democracy. Only in this way might the interests of a man in the street be served. In short, progress in politics facilitates the maturation of politics.

Similarly, environmental studies have seen much improvement over the past few years, and it has helped set the stage for breakthroughs in the area. With the rise in technology, as elaborated earlier, the use of fossil fuels and, resultantly, pollution is also on the rise. And as the phenomenon continues to increase the average global temperature, the drive to decarbonize economies has started to ameliorate the threat of a complete climate disaster. Thus, innovative solutions, alternatives to fossil fuels, are being developed by scientists across the globe. For one thing, the high potential of Hydrogen to be used as a green fuel, emitting only water vapour and warm air, is being explored to be used instead of coal, oil, and gas. This innovation in environmental studies promises excellent future opportunities for evolution.

Turning to the defence sector, innovations and inventions have stimulated growth in the sector to improve its efficacy tenfold. All the work that humans used to carry out in the past is now being shared by robots and automated machinery, making it more efficient and safer. To give an example, robot technology has been inculcated in the armed forces’ defence missions for various tasks. One of these is the safe humanitarian demining of miles of land using robots. Humanitarian demining involves the 100 per cent detonation of land mines, which is a perilous task, but robots have made it relatively safer. Thus, a safe working environment in the defence sector enables safer and better prospects in the arena as missions are not as dangerous as they used to be without such innovations.

“The World of Innovation is an Infinite Horizon, Forever Unfolding with Boundless Potential.”

– Apple Inc. Cofounder, Steve Jobs

Contrarily, where innovation stops, its perks also come to a halt, and history bears witness to this phenomenon. It is true that whenever mankind has taken a back seat in research and development and shown laziness, destruction has been its destiny. For instance, Ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley Civilizations declined due to their failure to adapt to the changing times. Compared to their competitors, the Persians and the Greeks, the former two civilizations greatly lacked military tactics and adjustment to the changing environmental conditions. Hence, they no more exist on the map of the world. Thus, it could be claimed that a failure to accommodate world transformations, i.e. not carrying out innovations, leads to the ultimate ruin of empires.

“Time and Tide Wait for None.”

Another important factor is man’s over-dependence on antibiotics, which has started showing terrifying manifestations. It has literally put humanity on the threat of extinction as man has no alternative stronger than antibiotics currently in use. As a case in point, the Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA, is a highly resistant super bacterium that has developed resistance against several commonly used antibiotics. Many other such bacteria are also evolving, and if men do not control antibiotic usage and dependence and fail to develop suitable alternatives, the prospects look quite bone-chilling.

Finally, man has also fallen through in developing better energy resources since the time he has learnt to harness energy. Thus, the only sources he has for use are fossil fuels – namely coal, oil, and natural gas – which are not only depleting at an exponential rate but also leaving the world to endure the climatic and environmental ramifications of their usage. For instance, their high usage has increased the average global temperature to such an extent that the hazard bells of permafrost melt-down have started ringing. In case this archaic layer of ice melts, nightmarish perils would be unleashed, including the introduction of ancient bacteria and increased flooding. So, if man fails to innovate and quickly shift to green forms of energy, he should prepare for a terrifying future.

Although a lack of innovations indeed proves fatal in many ways, specific practical steps could be undertaken to avoid harm. First, underdeveloped countries must invest in the latest technology in the industry to improve their progress indicators. By using the latest innovative technology, they would be better able to increase their yield and, resultantly, evolve and become self-reliant.

“There is a Way to do It Better; find it.”

– a Famous Inventor, Thomas Edison

Second, it is a dire global need to crush the pharmaceutical mafia, which is putting hurdles in the way of approval of better, cheaper, and safer options to treat ailments. To elaborate, as pharmaceutical companies earn significant profits by selling medicines and drugs and contribute much to the national GDP, they substantially impact governments’ policy-making. Hence, they leave no stone unturned to make the drug approval authorities reject viable alternatives.

Third, mankind should strive towards cheaper and renewable energy resources by adopting innovative methods to harness energy. For instance, constructing dams and setting up solar power plants are two ways to produce clean and green energy as opposed to utilizing fossil fuels. Producing energy from water and sunlight would not only be lighter on the national budget but also easier on the environment.

Another important measure is to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, both between industry and academia and among countries across the globe. This would allow for faster incorporation of new methods developed in the academic sector into the industrial arena; innovations made in one part of the world would also be quickly shared and utilized in other countries. And just like the swift development and deployment of COVID-19 vaccines, the latest inventions would also find their way worldwide in no time, serving their advantages everywhere.

Finally, promoting entrepreneurship and increasing the entrepreneurs’ access to government funding and mentorship is another effective strategy to promote innovation. Many entrepreneurs fail to continue their ventures for extended periods just for the lack of capital, and many others are unable to build their efficiency because of the unavailability of guidance. So, sturdy government backing and a supportive mentor-mentee relationship could prove highly productive in encouraging innovations.

After studying all the pros of innovations and cons of stagnation, one might ask if innovations are always promising. Having a quick look at history, it becomes crystal clear that not all developments are good and positive. A case in point is America’s nuclear attack on Japan. While the world was unaware of the destruction atomic weapons were capable of, the United States of America dropped two nuclear bombs, namely “Little Boy” and “Fat Man”, on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively. This innovation was an eye-opener for mankind as not only it caused colossal devastation and loss of life back then, but also its fallout is being experienced to date. So, it could not be claimed with certainty that all innovations have positive outcomes.

“Innovation is Moving at a Scarily Fast Pace.”

– an American Business Magnate, Bill Gates

To wrap things up, undoubtedly, all new things are not necessarily good. However, those innovations that lead humanity towards its zenith are unquestionably paramount, for they begin a chain reaction of never-ending improvements and discoveries. Where their dearth leads to destruction – as seen in ancient Egypt and modern-day over-dependence on antibiotics – supporting entrepreneurship, utilizing the latest technology, and moving towards cheaper energy resources are some ways to reap the benefits of innovations. These benefits include, but are not limited to, the enhancement of robot technology for defence, decarbonizing economies for environmental betterment, cleaning the political environment of illegalities for the promotion of democracy, and introducing novelties in agriculture for improving the yield qualitatively and quantitatively. Hence, the bottom line is that perpetual development and enhancement, undeniably, bring about constant evolution.

To cut a long story short, Pakistan’s future depends on its economic platform, as it is the pivot around which the whole nation revolves. But, owing to the severe incapability of Pakistan’s government and institutions, the image of Pakistan has been seen as an ‘About to default’ country on the global canvas. Moreover, despite being in touch with IMF and getting millions of aid for decades, each time, it has only served to deteriorate Pakistan even more. Hence, Pakistan must move on from this vicious cycle of debts and aid and stand up for its own survival by inculcating effective plans and policies in its agendas if it wants to exist on the global map.
