Orientation and training are the pillars of staffing which lead the organization towards its goals and, ultimately, mission. Another critical step in managing staff is their satisfaction and performance. Once an organization has invested in its employees, their preference is to retain all competent and high-performing employees. Surprisingly, it not only aids in an organization’s performance but also is a useful tool to compete with competitors. Therefore, training and retention of employees is crucial for the organization in the long term.

- Work unit orientation:
The first type of orientation focuses on the individual itself. Its aim is to help employees understand what is expected of them in the organization and how its tasks would contribute towards overall organizational performance. Furthermore, such orientation also involves an introduction to the rest of the staff, thus, the start of the socialization process. This orientation is of utmost importance to give new employees a sense of belongingness and reduce stress.
- Organization orientation:
The second type of orientation helps the new employee know about the company’s goals, history, philosophy, procedures and rules. It should also include relevant HR policies and including a tour of the facilities. Therefore, such orientation has a much broader scope and purpose. The core agenda of this orientation is to align the individual goals and actions with that of the organization to achieve a win-win situation for both the employee and the organization.

In addition, an organization’s compensation system has been shown to have an impact on its strategic performance. Managers must develop a compensation system that reflects the changing nature of work and the workplace in order to keep people motivated. Organizational compensation can include many different types of rewards and benefits, such as base wages and salaries, wage and salary add-ons, incentive payments, and other benefits and services. Nonetheless, apart from traditional compensation strategies, managers may adopt some unconventional means.
- Skill-based pay: A pay system that rewards employees for the job skills they can demonstrate.
