“Pakistan has an important geostrategic location” is easy to write. The real question is, why is it important? This is where geopolitical theories can help you build a stronger argument. For questions on Pakistan’s geostrategic location, three theories are particularly useful: Heartland Theory, Rimland Theory, and Sea Power Theory. Understanding what these theories actually say makes it easier to apply them correctly in CSS answers.

Why Is Geostrategic Location Important?

Pakistan occupies a strategic position between South Asia, Central Asia, China, and the Middle East. It shares borders with China, India, Afghanistan, and Iran and has access to the Arabian Sea. This location matters for several reasons. Pakistan is close to important land routes, regional conflict zones, major powers, and maritime trade routes. Its location therefore affects its foreign policy, national security, regional connectivity, trade, and relations with major powers.

But simply mentioning these facts is not enough. Theories can help explain the strategic value behind Pakistan’s geographical position.

1. Heartland Theory

Halford Mackinder’s Heartland Theory focuses on the strategic importance of Eurasia’s central landmass. Mackinder argued that control of the Eurasian Heartland could provide a major strategic advantage because of its central position, resources, and access to surrounding regions. The basic idea is that geography can shape the distribution of global power.

How Can It Be Applied to Pakistan?

Pakistan is not itself the Heartland, but it is located close to the Eurasian interior, particularly Afghanistan and Central Asia, while also sharing a border with China. Therefore, Heartland Theory can be used to explain why Pakistan has strategic relevance in Eurasian geopolitics and regional connectivity.

How to Use It in an Answer

If the question asks about Pakistan’s geostrategic importance, you can argue that,  “Pakistan’s proximity to Central Asia, Afghanistan, and China places it near the strategic Eurasian landmass, making its territory important for regional connectivity and competition among major powers.”

The theory gives a geopolitical explanation to what would otherwise be just a geographical statement.

Where Else Can You Apply Heartland Theory?

The same theory can be used in

  1. Pakistan-Central Asia relations
  2. Afghanistan and regional security
  3. Eurasian geopolitics
  4. China-Pakistan relations
  5. Great-power competition in Eurasia

2. Rimland Theory

Nicholas Spykman’s Rimland Theory developed partly in response to Mackinder’s emphasis on the Heartland. Spykman argued that the coastal belt surrounding the Eurasian landmass, which he called the Rimland, was extremely important for global power. These areas connect the land and sea and contain major populations, resources, and strategic routes. In simple terms, Mackinder focused on the Heartland. Spykman focused on the Rimland.

How Can It Be Applied to Pakistan?

Pakistan lies along the southern edge of the Eurasian landmass and has access to the Arabian Sea. It therefore has both a continental position and a maritime connection. This makes Rimland Theory useful for explaining Pakistan’s importance in South Asian geopolitics, Indian Ocean politics, and regional strategic competition.

How to Use It in an Answer

You can argue that “Pakistan’s location along the southern edge of Eurasia and its access to the Arabian Sea give it strategic importance at the meeting point of continental and maritime geopolitics.” This is much stronger than simply writing that Pakistan is “located at the crossroads of important regions.”

Where Else Can You Apply Rimland Theory?

The theory can also be used in

  1. Indian Ocean geopolitics
  2. Indo-Pacific competition
  3. South Asian geopolitics
  4. US-China strategic competition
  5. China’s regional strategy

3. Sea Power Theory

Alfred Thayer Mahan’s Sea Power Theory emphasizes the importance of the sea in building national power. Mahan argued that countries with strong maritime capabilities, naval strength, ports, commercial shipping, and access to important sea routes can gain significant economic and strategic advantages. In simple terms, control and effective use of the sea can increase a country’s economic and military power.

How Can It Be Applied to Pakistan?

Pakistan has a coastline along the Arabian Sea and important ports, particularly Karachi and Gwadar. Its maritime position gives it access to international trade routes and makes the Arabian Sea important for its economy and national security.

How to Use It in an Answer

Sea Power Theory can be used when discussing Gwadar Port, CPEC, Maritime security, Indian Ocean politics, and Pakistan’s trade routes. For example, instead of simply stating that Gwadar is strategically important, you can argue “Pakistan’s access to the Arabian Sea and the development of Gwadar enhance its potential role in maritime trade and regional connectivity, making sea power an important element of its geostrategic significance.” The theory therefore helps you explain why access to the sea matters strategically.

Where Else Can You Apply Sea Power Theory?

You can use the same theory in

  1. Gwadar Port and CPEC
  2. Indian Ocean geopolitics
  3. Pakistan’s maritime security
  4. Regional trade and connectivity
  5. Naval competition in the Indian Ocean

How Can You Combine These Theories?

Sometimes, one theory is enough. However, a broader question on Pakistan’s geostrategic location may allow you to use more than one. You can divide the argument according to Pakistan’s geographical advantages

Heartland Theory → Pakistan’s proximity to the Eurasian interior and Central Asia.

Rimland Theory → Pakistan’s position along the southern edge of Eurasia.

Sea Power Theory → Pakistan’s access to the Arabian Sea and its ports.

Together, these theories help explain Pakistan’s importance from land, regional, and maritime perspectives. But remember that do not to use all three theories just because you know them. Select the theory that directly supports the point you are making.

How to Apply a Theory in the Exam

First, identify the central argument in the question. Then select the theory that best explains or strengthens that argument. Briefly introduce the theory’s core idea, connect it directly to your argument, support the point with relevant factual or contemporary evidence, and evaluate how well the theory applies.

For example, if you argue that Pakistan’s location gives it strategic importance because it connects major regions and provides access to important trade routes, you can then consider which theory best supports this argument. Depending on the focus, Heartland, Rimland, or Sea Power Theory may be relevant. The theory should strengthen the argument you have already developed. It should not become the argument itself.

Start with the Question, Not the Theory

The important step is always to understand “what is asked in the question?” Do not see a question about Pakistan’s geostrategic location and immediately start searching for a theory to insert. First, identify the arguments that can answer the question. For example, Pakistan’s location can be discussed in terms of regional connectivity, proximity to major powers, access to the Arabian Sea, and strategic importance in Eurasian and Indian Ocean politics.

Once these arguments are clear, ask whether a theory can make any of them stronger. Heartland Theory may help explain Pakistan’s relevance to the Eurasian region; Rimland Theory can support an argument about its position along the southern edge of Eurasia, while Sea Power Theory can strengthen an argument about its maritime position.

Conclusion

Pakistan’s geostrategic location can be explained from different angles. Heartland Theory helps explain its connection with the Eurasian interior, Rimland Theory highlights its position between land and sea, while Sea Power Theory explains the importance of its maritime access.

For CSS/PMS, the aim is not to mention as many theories as possible. The aim is to select the right theory, connect it with a clear argument, and support it with relevant evidence. Build the argument first. Use theory to make it stronger.
