1-Introduction

Artificial intelligence has had a profound impact on modern humans. It has changed how people comprehend and work to develop problem-solving tools. One such tool is ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), which uses artificial intelligence to generate prompt content from a data set processed onto the technology. It has attracted a range of stakeholders, such as marketing managers, academics, data miners, and competitive examinations aspirants, i.e., CSS and PMS. Unfortunately, ChatGPT has failed to generate effective essays, especially its outline and introductory part, making it detrimental to the aspirants of competitive examinations. To begin with, ChatGPT generates inaccurate responses due to its infancy. Furthermore, the reactions it generates lack critical thinking and creativity, reflecting the absence of human factors necessary for unique perspectives. In addition, its dataset may contain biased information, and the responses it generates lack depth. This article critically evaluates the cons of ChatGPT and relates these to examine its application for generating outlines and introductory paragraphs for essay writing in competitive examinations.

2-What is ChatGPT, and how does it work?

Powered by an AI Chabot, ChatGPT uses generative Al, which inputs data and generates new content that allows users to receive human-like responses on various topics, such as writing essays or managing one’s daily routine. Moreover, ChatGPT differs from traditional search engines like Google because the former responds promptly to the users. In addition, ChatGPT works through its specialized algorithm mechanism, Generative Pre-trained Transformer, which uses deep learning to predict text, including the next word, sentence, or paragraph. Pulling from a large text dataset through deep understanding, ChatGPT uses the dataset to learn about language, grammar, and the structure and meaning of words and sentences. Therefore, ChatGPT creates novel responses using a complicated learning tool enabled by AI.

3-The relevance of ChatGPT in learning essay writing

English Essay writing poses a challenge for students, especially for the non-native, who understand English as a second language. Above all, when required in real-time examination settings, essay writing becomes more challenging for students. Moreover, the competitive examinations in Pakistan, PMS and CSS, needed their aspirants to crack essay writing, a herculean task that unnerved thousands of aspirants; hence, they have found the ChatGPT a way to resolve the challenge of cracking essay writing.

4-How has ChatGPT failed to generate an effective outline and introductory paragraph for the CSS and PMS essays?

Therefore, there is a dire need to evaluate the effectiveness of ChatGPT in assisting students in coming up with the art of essay writing, especially in writing organized outlines and attention-grabbing introductions for the PMS and CSS essays. The text critically evaluates whether or not ChatGPT is effective in aiding the aspirants in making an essay outline and introduction the way the examiners want them to write.

  •  Inaccuracies and ambiguities

To begin with, ChatGPT has failed to make an outline that is up to date, making it unable to furnish a comprehensive response. Since ChatGPT claims that the information updated into the technology is limited to 2021, it may generate incorrect data. ChatGPT fabricates facts, which is termed a “Hallucination”. For example, in the oft-cited research paper, “How close is ChatGPT to Human Experts?” the researchers noted that the technology occasionally provides plausible-sounding but erroneous information. Furthermore, there are no references or citations for obtaining information, a hallmark in the essays of competitive examinations. In contrast, the aspirants are expected to write up-to-date information and research-based knowledge. Thus, its information world is limited to 2021 and prior, limiting its scope.

  • Dearth of Creativity

Since an essay is a piece of writing, making it unique for every writer, ChatGPT can kill the creative energy of the aspirants in writing an outline and introduction. To illustrate, many writing contests and journals have had to close submissions due to the overwhelming amount of ChatGPT- the written content they receive. This fact can be interpolated into the essay writing papers in CSS and PMS, as creativity is at the core of these essays. Furthermore, the aspirants’ overreliance on technology can complicate writing effective outlines and introductions in examination settings since the habit of getting easy responses from ChatGPT will not be available there. Moreover, ChatGPT tends to over-explain text in contrast to direct readers; as a result, it usually gives lengthy and redundant outlines that may not fulfil the criteria of three-hour essays in competitive examinations. Thus, it may put pressure on aspirants while writing outlines and introductions in attempting essays.

  • Lack of human touch

Further, ChatGPT has failed to reflect the unique voice, feelings, and opinions of writing outlines and introductory paragraphs. The aspirants’ reliance on ChatGPT can inhibit them from developing unique perspectives necessary for essay writing, especially in formulating introductory paragraphs. The subtle response reflected in an essay makes it easy for the examiner to analyze the worldview of the aspirants. Hence, it does not have emotional intelligence. On the other hand, the aspirants are expected to understand the nuance of the English language to exhibit ideas, concepts, and emotions through literary devices, such as irony, simile, and metaphors. In brief, ChatGPT has failed to elicit emotions through writing introductory paragraphs, especially in literary essays. Therefore, the aspirants cannot grasp the inherent originality incorporated in quality content, only to learn that they are just reiterating previously written material with little significance given to the subtleties in human language.

  • The inherent bias in training data

Next to it, the responses of the ChatGPT may reflect bias while training it on the data set. ChatGPT, like any machine learning tool, is trained on a vast data set that organizes specific responses based on human input. Therefore, some questions arise regarding its neutrality in providing diverse viewpoints. Above all, if the data being processed into ChatGPT is inaccurate, it can spread false or damaging information that may perpetuate cultural, racial, and gender biases. Since the technology lacks a human reviewer, it may generate a response, which may be harmful socially and politically.

  • Generates low-quality content

Moreover, ChatGPT generates mediocre content in a variety of ways. First, it shows grammatical and spelling errors and mistakes. As per the research paper “Adversarial Robustness of Neural-Statistical Features in Detection of Generative Transformers”“ChatGPT has failed to fully grasp the meaning inherent in idiomatic expression”. In other words, it has only words, not expressions. Additionally, the responses it generates are verbose and lack a direct way of answering, making redundancy a standard feature. In short, the content it generates is wordy and lacks the niceties of language.

  • The absence of insight

Although ChatGPT produces comprehensive and overly detailed responses, it has failed to reflect insight, a necessary feature of introductory paragraphs in the essays’ competitive examinations. Professor Christopher Bartel of Appalachian State University argues, “While a ChatGPT essay may exhibit high grammar qualities and sophisticated ideas, it still lacks insight, adding, “They are really fluffy; there’s no context; there’s no depth or insight.” Moreover, ChatGPT tends to cover a topic from various perspectives; nonetheless, it has failed to give solidified and context-based introductory paragraphs. In contrast, the introductory paragraph, especially the hook in competitive essays, bears tremendous importance in the examiners’ eyes. In a nutshell, ChatGPT can preclude the aspirants from formulating subjective opinions necessary for essay writing.

5-Final thought

To conclude, ChatGPT may not assist the aspirants of CSS and PMS in learning essay writing, especially in formulating outlines and introductory paragraphs. It generates false information that makes the outline inaccurate. It kills creativity, risking the creative energies of the aspirants. The text it generates lacks emotional factors, thereby creating ineffective introductory paragraphs. The data that the ChatGPT is fed with may develop a stigmatized worldview, being reflected in the outline. Due to its machine-generated language, it produces low-quality content. Ultimately, ChatGPT creates responses that create outlines and introductory paragraphs that lack an aspirant’s subjective perspective.
