Answer to the Question

Introduction

Self-purification is to clean one’s soul or nafs. Ehsan and self-purification are two different terms that have similar effects when it comes to ground realities. Islam has promoted both and asks its followers to implement them in their lives. Moreover, the Holy Prophet PBUH has demonstrated it in his actions. He showed humane behaviour with the prisoners of Badar and offered freedom to poor prisoners by asking them to educate Muslims. Moreover, he also implemented it when the people of Taif threw stones at him, and he also forgave the people of Makkah after the conquest of Makkah. All the events undermine that both concepts are pivotal if one is a believer in Islam. It helps man by abstaining from sins and facilitates man to correct his wrongdoings. Further, it also assists society in emerging a better place by eliminating social and moral evils, promoting humanitarian behaviour, and promoting the rule of law in society.

Elaborating on Self-Purification and Ehsan

Self-purification is to purify oneself. It means to kill nafs-e-ammara, the desire to perform sin and to prioritize nafs-e-lawama over nafs-e-ammara. And Ehsan means doing a favour and showing kindness to others. When both self-purification and Ehsan merge, it enables a man to abstain from sins and facilitates him to do good deeds for others, especially when one needs some favour.

Instances of Self-Purification and Ehsan in the Holy Prophet’s Life

  • Freedom for Badar’s prisoners on educating Muslims

The pure example of self-purification and Ehsan is the sirat of the Holy Prophet PBUH when he ordered poor prisoners of the Battle of Badar to teach Muslims for their freedom. It was the custom of Arabs that the loser side surrendered themselves to save themselves from the anger of the winners. But after Islam, even though the battle of Badar was fought with fewer fighters from the Muslim side, they won the battle. And the disbelievers were afraid of punishment. Many earned their freedom through money and other resources. However, those who were not able to pay for their freedom were asked to educate Muslims to free themselves from slavery. It was the Ehsan of the holy Prophet PBUH that made easy wages for freedom.

  • Humane behaviour with prisoners of Badar

The Arabs, before Islam, kept their slaves in bad conditions. The behaviours of war prisoners were extremely inhumane by Arabs. So, the Holy Prophet PBUH discontinued the inhuman behaviour toward all slaves, including the war prisoners. He took the first step towards human behaviour with the prisoners of the Battle of Badar. The Badar prisoners were kept in safe, hygienic places, and they were given proper food that other Muslims used to eat. So human behaviour with the prisoners of Badar was another example of self-purification and Ehsan that the Holy Prophet PBUH did during his life.

  • Forgive the disbelievers of the Valley of Taif

Another demonstration of self-purification and ehsan was exhibited during the travel to Taif. The journey to Taif was for the trade purpose. But when the disbelievers learned about the Holy Prophet’s announcement about Allah, they were enraged. In their anger, they had injured the holy Prophet PBUH. And he forgave them when Hazrat Jibrael a.s. came for permission to destroy them, but he also prayed for them. The incident of forgiveness and prayer in favour of the opponent is another example of Ehsan and self-purification by the holy Prophet PBUH.

  • Common amnesty for people of Makkah after the conquest of Makkah

Makkah was the home town of the Prophet, but disbelievers have forced Muslims and the holy Prophet PBBUH to leave the city. Moreover, they have oppressed Muslims inhumanely. When Muslims recaptured the city, the holy Prophet PBUH announced common amnesty to all and declared the house of Abou-Jehal as a peaceful point. This was a great act of self-purification when Prophet PBUH showed mercy and Ehsan on his greatest enemy and forgave all the disbelievers in Makkah.

Individual impacts of self-purification and Ehsan

  • Abstaining from sins

Self-purification prohibits man from getting involved in sins. It enhances the moral values of man as it restricts himself from evils, like cheating, lying, theft, bribery, etc. It would bring positive change in man as his soul would be healed. Moreover, sins are the basis of any trouble in society, so when man hinders himself from committing sins, he blocks the door of immorality in society. Additionally, it empowers nafs-e- lawama, which brings satisfaction and contentment in man.

  • Enhancing the morality of humans

When one closed the doors of sins on him, he replaced the bad deeds with righteous actions. So he is involved in strengthening his believes and offering prayers. He pushed himself in 5 time prayers, fasting, zakat, pilgrim. It empowers man’s  nafs-e-lawama, enforcing more good impacts on man, including the  urge to perform ehsan on mankind.

Social impacts of self-Purification and Ehsan

  • Eliminating moral and social evils of society

When a man is restricted from doing sins and involved in performing good deeds, including prayers of Islam, this eliminates moral and social evils from society. This helps in removing sins, like adultery, corruption, and lies, from society. Moreover, Ehsan would help others in doing self-purification. So when both worked together, they emerged a new society devoid of social evils. When social and moral evils are removed from society, it promotes high ethical and moral values in society. This is achieved through nafs-e-lawama, where an eagerness to perform good deeds is encouraged. So, a society that lacks moral and social evils emerges as a society with high ethics and moral values.

  • Increasing humanitarian initiatives

Self-purification enables man to work for the disadvantaged people, and Ehsan encourages him to do a favour for them, regardless of their caste and locality. So both would increase humanitarian initiatives in society, which would result in a decrease in casualties. This would facilitate the Muslim ummah to stand for the Palestinians. And when all Muslims would take a stand for the Muslims living in other areas of the world, it would strengthen their stance in the world. As a whole, it would have a positive impact as humanitarian initiatives would be encouraged in society.

  • Increasing mutual solidarity

Additionally, they both would foster mutual understanding and solidarity among people. It would help men resolve the world’s humanitarian crisis. And solidarity throughout the Muslim ummah would bring fruitful results. As Palestinian issues, the crisis of the Kashmir issue, and the Uyghur community issue would be resolved better by implementing self-purification and ehsan in society.

  • Promoting the rule of law

Also, it would help to promote the rule of law in society.  Both self-purification and Ehsan would help the oppressed people, as the holy Prophet PBUH had helped in Badar. It would implement justice in society. As nafs-e-lawama would abstain a man from making wrong decisions, which would bring a society containing the rule of law it.

Critical analysis

Today’s society is struggling with humanitarian crises and moral evils. However, self-purification and Ehsan have the capability to resolve all the crises as they have solved them in the time of the holy Prophet PBUH. Moreover, it would also prohibit society from indulging again in such tasks. As a result, both would foster a society full of positivity and a man with self-contentment and satisfaction in society. It would give a solution to the crisis of the Palestinian people, the Uyghur community, Muslims and the Kashmiris. Above all, Ehsan and self-purification would bring a boon to society and resolve all matters.

Conclusion

Self-purification is an individual act that has an impact on the individual level and the societal level. When Ehsan is added to the concept, a boon of positivity and pureness in terms of spiritual effects and in terms of a crime and oppression-free society will emerge. It has the capacity to resolve the world’s humanitarian crisis, as well as to empower the rule of law in society.  So both together bring affirmative effects in the society as they have brought in times of the Holy Prophet PBUH.
