Answer to the Question

Introduction

International Humanitarian Organizations (IHO) have always supported people living in a crisis state and have had the honour of saving the lives of millions of people by providing humanitarian assistance. When the crisis in Ukraine started in February 2024, the humanitarian organizations rapidly responded to facilitate millions of people. They have provided people with necessities such as food, water, blankets, fuel, and stoves. Moreover, healthcare teams have delivered medicines and treated thousands of wounded in war. Along with the primary health facility, they have also given mental and psychological support by conducting recreational and cultural activities to bring people out from the trauma of war. Therefore, international organizations have aptly played their role in reducing the suffering of millions of people by assisting them in various ways.

Current dynamics of the Russia-Ukraine war

Ukrainian forces have been defending their territory against Russian forces with the utmost courage and utilizing their full force not to compromise their sovereignty. But Moscow, with a strong intention to capture Kharkiv with all possible means, is continuously committing war crimes by attacking civilians, schools, and hospitals. According to the International Red Cross Organisation, almost 18 million people need humanitarian assistance, and millions have been displaced. The world has not ever seen such a mass displacement of people after WWII. The sufferings of people are expected to increase with the arrival of winter. Thus, the ongoing crisis has been intensifying the problems of the locals; however, people are looking for help from international organizations.

Response of the International humanitarian organization on the Ukraine crisis

  • IOMs providing health aid, including mental and psychological support

The World Humanitarian Organization have provided health care facilities, including mental and psychological support for the well-being of war-inflicted people. They have established mobile health facilities and hospitals to treat war-affected people. For instance, IOM’s Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) units have assisted people by offering recreational activities, cultural activities, and life skill development. These measures have helped people to come out from trauma and mental depression caused by the ongoing war. Thus, humanitarian organizations have substantially assisted the people by providing medical facilities.

  • UNHCR ensuring shelter and availability of basic food items

International humanitarian organizations have assisted the people living in the crisis-ridden state of Ukraine by ensuring the availability of basic needed items. The continuous bombing by the Russian forces has disrupted the supply chain of food, water, and other essential items. In this regard, humanitarian organisations have facilitated the people by providing food, clean water, blankets, fuel, stoves, and ready cash. These essential items have helped ensure life’s sustainability in war-torn areas. Therefore, humanitarian organizations have helped people by providing essential items necessary for survival.

  • HIAS helping in the evacuation of civilians from the war-torn areas

International humanitarian organizations have helped safely evacuate people from the conflicted areas. Due to consistent attacks from Russian armed forces, people have been stranded in buildings and limited regions. It has become a challenging task to shift them to safer places. According to the International Red Cross organisation, delegates comprising technical staff with expertise in drafting specific plans for evacuation of people from conflicted areas have been dispatched to the conflicted areas to ensure rapid and safe displacement of people. This reflects the humanitarian organisation’s efforts to safeguard people’s lives in war-torn regions. Hence, evacuating people from life-threatening areas significantly contributes to international humanitarian organizations.

  • OXFAM International conveying awareness about the crimes of gender-based violence and human trafficking

A mass displacement of the people in the crisis-ridden state has made the people vulnerable to various crimes, such as gender-based violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. To protect people from becoming victims of these crimes, international organizations have made efforts to spread awareness about them. For example,OXFAM International has conducted sessions to provide awareness to people regarding crimes of gender-based violence and human trafficking. These sessions have helped civilians not become easy prey to heinous crimes. Therefore, humanitarian organizations have been protecting the Ukrainian people from becoming victims of various crimes.

  • HIAS assisting in the settlement of refugees in host countries

According to an estimate, almost 6 million people have fled to neighboring countries, Romania, Poland, and Moldova, since the crises started. The people who have left their homes due to conflict have faced multiple challenges settling in the host country. To address the problems of refugees, humanitarian organizations have established various links with the organizations of host countries and groups of volunteers. For instance, the HIAS welcome group, comprising volunteers, has helped the refugees resettle and start new careers. These welcome groups have facilitated their new neighbours searching for jobs and houses in their country. Thus, international organizations have substantially contributed to diminishing the problems refugees face.

  • ICRC equipping people with first aid training

International humanitarian organizations have been helping the people by equipping them with first aid training. The training would help the civilians deal with undesirable conditions efficiently and save themselves and the lives of others.According to the International Red Cross (IRC), 150,000 people have been trained to provide first aid. This initiative has significantly helped people become self-reliant and decreased the need for first aid workers. Therefore, international organizations have unconditionally tried to help people in disaster zones by providing first aid training.

Critical Analysis

International Humanitarian Organizations have worked significantly to alleviate the sufferings of the Ukrainian people, facing unlike conditions of war. Their work in Ukraine is unparalleled compared to those in the rest of the world. To illustrate, the people of Gaza are also living in the condition of war and suffering badly as compared to the people of Ukraine, but they are not receiving the same support that the international organizations have provided to the Ukrainians. This shows the discriminatory behaviour of International humanitarian organizations, formed with the sole objective of helping humanity irrespective of caste, colour, religion, and creed. Therefore, organizations must work truly for humanity to enhance their role in facilitating humanity.

Conclusion

In summary, international organizations have efficiently played their role in the Ukraine crisis by providing all possible assistance to people to reduce the atrocities that they have faced due to prolonged war. Humanitarian organizations have helped people by providing essential items, healthcare facilities, and crime awareness. Besides that, they have helped the people living in conflicted areas and facilitated those who have migrated to other countries. Therefore, the work of international humanitarian organizations in the war-torn state of Ukraine is commendable.
