Prophet Nuh (R.A) was a Prophet and leader of men. However, he was also a father. He, Prophet Nuh (R.A), turned to Allah with sadness and cried: ‘’O my Lord! Verily my son is of my family! And without any inch of doubt, your promise is true, and you are the Most Just of the judges. Prophet Nuh (R.A) remembered that Allah had promised to save his family. Prophet Nuh (R.S) did not doubt the promises of Allah, but he wanted to understand. Thus Allah taught Prophet Nuh (R.A) a lesson.
We use words to mean certain things as human beings, whereas, Allah can often give them new and more all-inclusive meanings. The word “prayer” originally meant making supplication to Allah. But Islam came and gave it a new meaning – it became the ritual prayer performed five times a day. When we use the word “Family’, we think of blood ties and relationships, and Prophet Nuh (R.A) was imploring Allah that his son was of his family. Allah told Prophet Nuh (R.A) that his son was not part of his family because he was unrighteous. The actual family was the righteous believers in Allah. Prophet Nuh (R.A) understood it and asked for forgiveness.
