Introduction

Predicting new possibilities from existing knowledge has enabled imagination to lead the superiority race between imagination and knowledge. It has not only broken the existing boundaries of knowledge but has also fostered creative problem-solving skills in humans. However, acting as the foundation of imagination and the source to reshape and refine, knowledge has become a must to give birth to imagination. Similarly, imagination inspires knowledge and helps humans apply previous knowledge to new inventions. The imagination of the future from sociocultural studies, along with the need for both imagination and knowledge to advertise business, proves that knowledge and imagination are co-related and cannot develop without one another. The inability of science to establish new theories in the absence of previous knowledge and imagination through the deviation of Pablo Picasso from traditional art to the Cubin style in artistic expression also proves that both components are necessary for the growth of each other. Thus, it is as clear as crystal that no one can play an outstanding role in any field without the other. The short piece of writing sheds light on the phrase’s meaning, the relation between imagination and knowledge and the facts that prove the complementary relationship between the two terms.

Decoding the meaning of the phrase “Imagination is more important than Knowledge”

Neither any word nor a phrase in English has a single meaning. However, there certainly exists a background behind every phrase, and similar is the case with the phrase “Imagination is more important than Knowledge”, said by the renowned scientist Einstein. He believed in new innovative ideas that could bring some change, especially in science. However, despite all the facts, he did not deny the role of knowledge, but he- a scientist- granted somewhat higher weight to the imagination.

Denying the meaning of the phrase through the establishment of the complementary relationship between Imagination and Knowledge

Furthermore, Einstein did not deny knowledge’s importance in his phrase, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Undoubtedly, there are multiple facts that prove that knowledge and imagination are complementary, and no one can perform outstandingly in the absence of one another. The first fact in this regard is the role of knowledge acting as the foundation of imagination, proving that it is impossible for imagination or an idea to pop up without knowledge or a vacuum. Contrastingly, novel and new ideas always occur with the help of previous knowledge, and it has become a fact that the more knowledge, the better the ideas. Similarly, knowledge is inspired by the imagination as it outbursts questions in your mind regarding any invention. To answer that question, the person uses and interprets his knowledge, proving that knowledge and imagination are the manifestations of one another.

In the same scenario, imagination helps one apply knowledge and predict something in the future, like the possibility of rain in the year. Several old people in Balochistan could use their previous knowledge of the bones of the sacrificed goats and other animals to predict rain for the same year. Moreover, weather forecast departments also interpret the previous data while predicting rain, temperature, and floods in the coming years. In addition, knowledge helps reshape and refine imagination, which can be observed using special tools while narrating a story. To narrate a story, a writer must be well aware of previous writing knowledge like punctuation and narrative style. Ultimately, it can easily be said that knowledge and imagination are mandatory for one another, with the establishment of symbiotic relations between them.

“To get knowledge and to imagine is to run on the way to success.”

Jalandhar Khan- a social activist

How are imagination and knowledge correlated with one another?

Moving ahead, several manifestations prove the correlation and interplay between imagination and knowledge. So, the first manifestation in this regard is the imagination of the future, like environmental predictions, from socio-cultural studies. For the purpose concerned, scientists usually read anthropology, past events, and sociology, as well as the study of present trends and research, to predict cultural evolution. So, reading and interpreting the previous knowledge to predict the future becomes compulsory, making it necessary for both knowledge and imagination to act together. Thus, without knowledge or imagination, it would be impossible to predict the future.

Similarly, knowledge and imagination are the need of the hour to advertise business in the current era. Moreover, no business can succeed without a unique idea, for it is well known that the more unique an idea is, the more chances there are for the business to flourish. On the other hand, the previous knowledge of market trends, consumer behaviour, and, above all, the ethics of society also hold a prime position in succeeding the idea of business. For example, the concept of selling contraceptives by any method would not be favoured in Pakistani society at any cost, as the use of contraceptives is not ethical in Muslim societies. Thus, to have a better, prosperous, and successful business, it is a must to interpret both previous knowledge and imagine a new idea collectively.

Similarly, scientists require both imagination and knowledge to prove new scientific theories. Moreover, its best manifestation is Einstein’s theory of relativity. Although he provided the theory on his own, it would have been impossible for him to understand and imagine such a theory if he had not known about science before the theory provision. Furthermore, it was not considered true unless it was proved in the scientific labs- the part of scientific knowledge owned and invented by the people before the present time- through the use of scientific instruments by the scientists. And the theory was recognized and proved correct after its successful lab experiments. Thus, it will be, for sure, correct to say that no theory in science is possible to be recognized or proved in either the absence of knowledge or imagination.

Furthermore, imagination and knowledge are critical components for excelling and having a unique style of artistic expression. It can easily be seen in the example of Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest artists in the Cubin art style. In history, he was a traditional artist with a better knowledge of arts since childhood, for his whole family had a deep relationship with arts. With the help of his previous knowledge, he imagined bringing a change in the arts field and excelled in the Cubin Style of art, a reason for his famous name. Thus, it is as clear as crystal that imagination and knowledge are dynamic and complementary.

Additionally, no problem can be solved with mere imagination or knowledge. In contrast, both of them had to help each other and solve a problem, which can easily be observed from the case of the coronavirus- a source of multiple deaths worldwide. The virus appeared as a death toll for the human race. Still scientist, with the help of knowledge in the form of laboratories, separated the virus and studied it with the help of their previous knowledge and developed vaccines to counter it. Thus, the imagination to develop a vaccine for Coronavirus became possible with the help of the knowledge the scientists had.

In addition, knowledge and imagination are necessary to make any astronomical discovery. Astronomy, the study of stars and galaxies, is impossible to be studied before studying Physics. So, to have a discovery in astronomy, you must have a thorough knowledge of physics; a part of that is that black holes were discovered because of the imagination to find pathways among the different galaxies of the world. In research of the pathways under the knowledge of physics, scientists became able to discover black holes; although not confirmed to be the pathways among the galaxies of the world, it was nothing but the imagination of the scientists compelling them to discover the black holes. Thus, both the knowledge of the physics and the scientist’s imagination proved necessary for the astronomical discoveries.

Last but not least, technological development is also impossible only through imagination. Moreover, it would be impossible for scientists to develop smartphones if they did not know electronics and computers. So, before the invention of smartphones, scientists had the knowledge of computers and electronics, but they were larger in size, and it was the imagination of the scientists to convert large-sized computers into pocket-sized smartphones, faster and more portable devices. Thus, it became clear from the above facts that knowledge and imagination are complementary, and without each other, none of them can play a vital role in life.

“Analyzing knowledge is to leading the world.”

Fazal ur Rehman- a government servant

Critical Analysis

After analyzing the scenario thoroughly, it has become clear that knowledge and imagination are complementary. Moreover, no progress seems possible without knowledge or imagination, but the priority of either section depends upon the field and issue to which it belongs. Similarly, Einstein preferred imagination over knowledge because he was a scientist. After all, he has not denied the importance of knowledge throughout his life.

Conclusion

In the end, both knowledge and imagination, in a few words, hold the same position in the context of progress. However, the relation between knowledge acting as the foundation of imagination and imagination reshaping and refining knowledge negates Einstein’s statement, “Imagination is more important than Knowledge.” The complementary relation is further proved correct from the imagination of the future through the knowledge of socio-cultural studies, the need for both imagination and knowledge for the advertisement of business and the application of imagination and knowledge to prove scientific theories. Thus, neither imagination nor knowledge can lead a man or an idea to succeed alone.
