Although the world had many hopes with the UN, it has failed to secure its aims and objectives and has divided the world into multiple segments. The powerful nations have been busy exploiting the developing or underdeveloped nations.
United Nations- an international organization aiming to maintain international peace and security- has failed to achieve its aims and objectives. Moreover, the Kashmir issue between Pakistan and India, and the Gaza issue, between Palestine and Israel, are still in conflict for several decades. It is undoubtedly a well-known fact that thousands of people have died in the conflicts, but United Nations has never bothered to intervene positively and settle the disputes peacefully. Currently, United Nations is under the influence of countries funding and supporting the organization, like USA and Russia. Similarly, having dire consequences, United Nations’ failure has promoted the formation of regional Corporations, like the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). In addition to it, the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations has become a puppet in the hands of the Western countries granting funds for its survival. However, the causes of UN failure include the emergence of regional organisations and the predominance of the undemocratic structure of the United Nations. Further, the weak role of the International Court of Justice has equally supported the failure of the United Nations. To counter the failure of the United Nations, granting funds to it alone cannot likely end the problems, but the demolition of veto powers- the countries with full authorities- and awarding equal powers to all the states in the organisation can minimize the effects of its failure. If the suggested steps are adequately adopted, United Nations can become a trusted organisation for third world countries- the sufferers.
“To strengthen United Nations democratically is to promote peace, prosperity, and stability of the world.”
(Sameeullah- a primary school teacher in Balochistan)
