The fundamental object features of this strategy are to keep the area free and open for trade, ensure freedom of navigation, and keep the area far from the influence of any sovereign state. The U.S. policy acts as fuel and fire to strengthen alliances with other countries and enhance security alliances in this region. This question discusses the Key Features of the US Indo-Pacific Policy.
What is the US Indo-Pacific policy?
Shinzo Abe initially used the term, the prime minister of Japan in the Indian parliament. Moreover, Trump’s Indo-Pacific policy is an update of Obama’s ” rebalancing ” strategy. “ It is also called Asia Pacific policy. It is a vast region comprising at least 38 countries and shares 44 per cent of the world’s surface area. Moreover, the region holds 64 per cent of the world’s population, 70 per cent of oil reserves, and 50 per cent of gas. Moreover, Malacca Strait, Sunda Strait, and Lombok Strait exist in this region.
Key features of the US indo-pacific policy
- ✓Open and free indo- Pacific Ocean
The US Indo-Pacific policy has also mainly aimed to keep the region free and open without state interference. This policy has ensured free and fair trade, freedom of navigation, and adherence to international law according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); as a result, all nations have free and fair access and gain advantages in this region. Thus, the US aims to bring prosperity and stability and strengthen alliances with other countries without interference from external forces.
- ✓US partnership with indo-pacific countries to counter China
Moreover, the US has partnered with Indo-Pacific countries to counter China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region because of China’s maritime claims in the South China Sea. For example, the US has strengthened our partnership through initiatives like the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), which mainly aimed to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region, accessible strategic sea routes, and defence agreements. Moreover, India is a major defence partner of the United States. According to the reports, India has purchased over $16 billion from the U.S. for defence platforms, and billions more are in the pipeline. Thus, the US has enhanced our alliances, like Japan, South Korea, Australia, and India, to counter China’s influence in this region.
- ✓Economic cooperation
The US has also promoted economic cooperation with Indo-Pacific countries so that the U.S. fostered economic growth and free trade in this region. For instance, the US has started a project called the Blue Dot Network to fulfil this aim. It brings together governments, companies, and civil society organisations to provide a globally recognised seal of approval confirming high standards in infrastructure and adherence to global best practices. The United States and other high-standard partners, such as Canada, Singapore, Japan, and the European Union, have been involved in this project. According to the FDI Markets Reports, U.S. businesses have announced 1,022 Greenfield investment projects in this region compared to previous years. Thus, the U.S. has promoted economic growth and free trade with Indo-Pacific countries to mitigate China’s growing influence in this region.
- ✓Enhance regional security
Similarly, the U.S. has also strengthened security alliances with Indo-Pacific countries to maintain regional security, peace, and stability in this region. Undoubtedly, the U.S. has made security alliances and joint military exercises with countries like Australia, South Korea, the Philippines, and Japan. For instance, the U.S. has signed an AUKUS Agreement with countries like Australia and the USA to fulfil this aim. In this agreement, the U.S. and UK will give Australia the technology to build nuclear-powered submarines that strengthen Australia’s naval security in this region. The US has also enhanced regional security through the U.S. and Japan security treaty and joint military exercises like the Malabar and RIMPAC naval exercises involving the US, India, Japan, and Australia. Moreover, the U.S. signed a bilateral communications compatibility and security agreement with India to facilitate defence cooperation in 2018. Thus, the U.S. has strengthened its security alliances with Indo-Pacific countries; it can maintain regional security, peace, and free, fair, and open trade in this region without interference from external states.
- ✓Enhance Contemporary global issues
Last, the U.S. has also addressed contemporary global issues like climate change with Indo-Pacific countries. For example, to fulfil this purpose, the Quad countries like India, Japan, Australia, and the United States are working together to protect the environment in the Indo-Pacific region. They are trying to mitigate climate change and global warming impacts by promoting clean and more renewable energy sources. Thus, the U.S. has mitigated climate issues to make the region more prosperous for trade and economic growth.
Conclusion
The Indio-Pacific region is crucial for every country due to its trade routes and economic significance. Undoubtedly, the U.S. has mainly focused on bringing economic growth, peace, prosperity, and stability to this region. The fundamental object features of this strategy are to keep the area free and open for trade, ensure freedom of navigation, and keep the area far from the influence of any sovereign state. Moreover, the US has also promoted economic cooperation and strengthened security alliances with Indo-Pacific countries. Along with this, the US has also partnered with Indo-Pacific countries to counter China’s growing influence in this region.
