There is no doubt that modern civilization brought many gifts to us but along with them, it gave us the “Gift” of environmental pollution. It is one of the most serious problems faced by humanity today. Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which people pollute their surroundings. People have always polluted their surroundings. But throughout much of history, pollution was not a major problem. People lived in uncrowded rural areas; they have no pollution-causing machines or vehicles. The development of crowded industrial cities in the 18th and 19th centuries made pollution a major problem. Automobiles and other new inventions made pollution sadly worse. Since the late 1960s, millions of people have become alarmed by the dangers of pollution.
Environmental pollution has been caused by physical, biological, and chemical factors. There are many kinds of pollution and it has its own cause. For example, there is air pollution. People make the air dirty with gases and smoke. A healthy atmosphere is contaminated by Carbon and smoke emitted by vehicles. Poisonous gases from the chimneys of factories make the air impure. Badly polluted air can cause allergy, illness, and even death. There is water pollution. Water is the source of life. But people throw garbage in the canals and rivers. Chemical waste from factories is thrown into the water of canals and rivers. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of soil by such water reduces the amount of land available for growing food. This poison reaches us through drinking water, the meat of animals, and milk. Ground pollution is another kind of pollution. This mars the beauty of nature and its surroundings. Heaps of dirt, garbage, and excrement contaminate the atmosphere. Excessive noise is also a sort of pollution. Noise from radios, TVs, loudspeakers, from vehicles and their horns, and running factories, is harmful to health. In short, because of environmental pollution, life on earth is in danger.
Everyone wants to reduce pollution. But the pollution problem is as complicated as it is serious. It is complicated because much pollution is caused by things that benefit people. For example, automobiles, factories, fertilizers are useful in one way but at the same time, they are the cause of pollution. Thus, to end or gradually reduce pollution, people will have to stop using many things that benefit them. Pollution can be gradually reduced in several ways. Scientists and engineers must work to lessen the amount of pollution. Governments should pass and enforce laws that require businesses and individuals to stop or cut down certain polluting activities.
People should form groups and organizations to persuade the public to adopt healthy ways of life. Many people unknowingly contaminate the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other substances, and damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. They should be educated and informed of the danger to their health and life, their civic sense should be awakened.
