Introduction
Tolerance and forgiveness are the two remarkable characteristics of the personality of Prophet PBUH. As He (SAW) says“Indeed Allah is kind and loves kindness in all matters” Sahih Muslim. Such an incredible display of tolerance and forgiveness can be seen in various events of the life of Prophet PBUH. As prophet SAW faced many difficulties, he remained firm in his mission by tolerating the hardships and adversaries of the Qurashites. He SAW remained tolerant during the three-year siege of Shi’b Abi Talib, the difficulties at the valley of Taif, and the mockery and adversities of the Quraish of Makkah. Moreover, when He SAW migrated to Medina, He set an example of religious tolerance in the form of the Charter of Medina. Similarly, various events show the attribute of forgiveness in the personality of the Holy Prophet PBUH. He SAW forgave the prisoners of the battle of Badr on easy conditions and also forgave the person who martyred his beloved uncle Hazrat Hamza RA. Moreover, He SAW showed forgiveness towards the evils conducted by the Quraishites in the form of the peace truce of Sulah-e-Hudaibya. Lastly, He granted general amnesty to all the Makkans during the conquest of Makkah. The characteristics of tolerance and forgiveness in the personality of Prophet SAW are truly a role model from which the world can learn.
The Status of Tolerance in the Life of the Prophet (SAW)
The life of Prophet SAW is filled with the emotions of love, kindness and tolerance. He (SAW) never cursed his enemies and always faced adversaries with tolerance and patience. As stated in a hadith,
“The best of Islam is to behave with gentleness and tolerance”
Zahr al-Firdaws
Following are the events in the life of Prophet SAW which show the extraordinary trait of tolerance in the personality of Prophet SAW.
- Tolerance at Shi’ib Abi Talib
During the three years of Shib Abi Talib, the Quraish tribe imposed social and economic boycott against Prophet Muhammad SAW and his followers at the narrow valley near Makkah. Prophet SAW along with other Muslims faced severe food shortages. Despite all the hardships, Prophet SAW remained tolerant and steadfast to his mission of spreading the word of Allah.
- Tolerance and Forgiveness at Taif
Prophet SAW went to Taif to invite people towards Islam. However, the people of Taif did not listen to him. They stoned him and made him bleed. At that moment, Allah sent the angel towards the Prophet SAW; however, the prophet SAW showed a high level of tolerance and forgave them. Not only this, He SAW prayed for the people of Taif:
“My Lord! Forgive my people for they do not know”
Sahih Al Bukhari
- Tolerance at the Face of infidels of Makkah
When Prophet SAW announced prophethood, the Quraish of Mecca turned against him. They hurt him by mocking and threatening him. One day, Prophet SAW was threatened to leave the cause of Islam, but he remained strong and fought all the opposition with tolerance by saying,
“Even if they place the sun in my right hand and moon in my left hand to leave the cause of Islam, I will never stop defending Islam”
Al Serah Al Nabawiyyah
- Treatment of Non-Muslims in Medina
The best example of tolerance in the life of Prophet SAW is the treatment of non-muslims according to the charter of Medina. In the charter, Prophet SAW showed mercy and tolerance towards other faiths including Judaism. He SAW granted them equal rights including the right of worship. Religious harmony in the state of medina is the biggest example of tolerance toward other faiths.
- Tolerance Towards the Bedouin Who Urinated in Masjid-e-Nabavi
One day, a Bedouin came to the masjid of Prophet SAW and urinated there. In his act, the companions felt outraged and wanted to punish that man. However, Prophet SAW calmly and gently explained to that man the importance of cleanliness of the mosque. Treatment with Arab Bedouins is an example of patience and tolerance practised by Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
The Grade of Forgiveness in the Life of Prophet SAW
Not only tolerance but forgiveness is also a remarkable feature of the personality of Prophet PBUH. He never cursed or took revenge In the matters of personal interest and always forgave his enemies with kindness. He SAW says,
“The one who does not forgive others will not be forgiven by Allah”
Sahih al-Bukhari
- Forgiveness to Prisoners of War
Prophet SAW established rules of war in which prisoners were treated kindly and were forgiven after the battle. Unlike time of Jahaliyyah when prisoners of war were tortured and humiliated. He advised his followers never to attack an incapacitated soldier and to deal him with mercy and forgiveness. For instance, at Ghazwa-i-Badr, prisoners of war were released on a condition that they would teach to Muslim students. Thus, prisoners of war were treated with kindness and forgiveness.
- Granted Pardon to Wahshi
Prophet’s beloved uncle Hazrat Hamza RA was martyred by Wahshi, who was appointed by Hinda. His body was mutilated during the battle of Uhud. The martyrdom of Hazrat Hamza was a source of great grief for Prophet Muhammad SAW, but when Wahshi accepted Islam, Prophet SAW forgave him.
- Forgiveness During Sulah-e-Hudaibya
The Treaty of Hudaiyba was designed to end conflict and establish peace between the Quraish of Mecca and Muslims. The treaty talked about mutual peace for ten(10) years. Despite all the hostilities and hardships Prophet SAW faced due to the Quraishites, Prophet SAW acted with kindness, forgave all the previous conflicts and evils of Quraish, and signed the treaty. ALLAH called the Treaty of Hudaibya a great success in the following words
“ Verily, we have given you a clear victory”
– (Quran 48:1)
- General Amnesty at the Conquest of Makkah
When the conquest of Makkah took place in the 8th Hijri, the people of Makkah feared of the punishment for the atrocities they conducted on Muslims. However, when Prophet SAW conquered Makkah, He SAW forgave every person and granted general amnesty to all. He refused to take revenge or punish anyone and granted forgiveness to all by saying, Go, you are free” – Prophet SAW.
- Leniency Towards Banu Qurayza
Banu Qurayza was a Jewish tribe of Medina who betrayed Muslims and broke the charter of Medina. The tribe sided with the enemies of Muslims in the Battle of Trench. After the victory of Muslims in the battle, Banu Qurayza was put under siege. Prophet SAW appointed an arbitrator from Banu Aws to give judgement according to the Torah. Despite announcing severe retribution and punishment for the betrayal, Prophet SAW showed respect and leniency towards Jews and accepted judgment according to Jewish tradition.
Critical Analysis
In the modern world, the teachings of Prophet SAW about tolerance and forgiveness are much needed at the social and political level to establish global peace. At the social level, religious extremism has pushed the world towards violence and Islamophobia. At the political level, the unforgiving and hawkish attitude of the world’s political leaders has caused pain and suffering to poor countries like Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan and Yemen. All these issues at the social and political levels can be resolved if the world learns from the teachings of Islam about kindness, tolerance and forgiveness. As Allah says in the Quran:
“We have sent you (O Muhammad) only as a mercy upon the worlds”
Al Anbiya: 107
Conclusion
Tolerance and forgiveness are the attributes of personality of the Holy Prophet SAW that can be seen during various events in the life of Prophet SAW. At Shi’ib Abi Talb, at the Valley of Taif in Makkah and in Medina, he faced hardships with tolerance and neither cursed his enemy nor punished them. These traits helped him spread Islam at the fastest pace around the world, and these values are role models for all the people to spread peace and love and to stop hatred with tolerance and forgiveness.
